DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE AND DECORATION

by the local carpenters gave a local touch
to the texture of the walls, the hollow tiles
of the district affording means of treating
copings and other features in accordance
with local tradition. Only the stone
columns of the cloisters were imported
from Bordeaux and the metal windows
from England. Oak and marble fireplaces,
oak boarded floors and panellings form the

of Lord Dewar, Messrs. Pulman & Son,
Garden Craftsmen, of Newman Street,
Oxford Street, have carried out the scheme

of formal gardening shown in the two
accompanying illustrations. The site of
this formal garden was originally devoted
to chicken runs. It will be noticed that it
is at the foot of a terraced slope, imme-

utilised for the pool in the centre of the
rose garden. Being in full view of the
house, with a slope upon the further side,
the whole site lent itself admirably to
formal treatment. A small figure plays a
jet of water in the centre of the pool, the
sides of which are formed of York stone
slabs with paved walks around ; turf was
introduced, and geometric rose beds, with
planted borders all round up to the walls,
which are constructed of stone quarried
