on the estate and built partly dry, with
saxifrages and other plants introduced in
the joints. Flights of steps lead up to the
house on the one side and to a gate leading
on to the public road opposite. An octa-
gonal garden house, built of the same local
stone was introduced, being backed and
flanked with evergreen and flowering
shrubs. This house, which can be seen
in one of the illustrations, was placed so
that a fine vista is obtained of the rest of
the grounds and surrounding country. 0
Another example of formal gardening
planned by the same firm is the lily pool
at Bracken Hill. In this case they had to
deal with a most unpromising and awk-
ward piece of ground, irregular in shape,
sloping from one end to the other, and
flanked on one side by some old garden
buildings. There was but little top soil, as

the rock came to within a few inches of the
surface, so that some considerable amount
of soil had to be imported, and the rock
from the excavations carted away. The
site is enclosed on all four sides, three
sides by low walls formed of local stone,
with ample planting pockets, and sur-
mounted by a flat York stone coping. The
fourth side is enclosed by an ornamental
iron fence, and gateway. The sides of the
pool are formed with sawn York stone
slabs, and the paths surrounding it are
laid with the same material. 0 0
