Robbia group here reproduced. The truth
seems to be that this group and many others
were taken, not from the Verrocchio, but
from the Leonardo, which turns out to be
the missing link in a very interesting
series. No documentary evidence exists in
regard to it, though we understand Sir
Theodore Cook is now searching for it in

Florence, but the method and materials
are very singular, being a stone carving
overlaid with gesso on which the surface-
details are delicately elaborated. In many
other ways the mark of the youthful ex-
perimentalist is very clear, and anything
less conventional than the technique could
scarcely be imagined. It is significant also
