A Journey from Nxennito Larissa.
fairest is on a Hill, and hath charge Port-co before it, Reported by four
Marble Pillais,- near which is a Tower os Wood with a Clock and a
Bell in it; from whene I had a good Prosped: of the City. There is
also an Arch, which seems to be Ancient, and a rivolet running tindei
it. A large Slone also which seems to be part os a Pillar, with this
Inscription SHA-NC. A little way out os the City, there is a no-
ble AqueduB of Stone, with about two hundred Arches, made srom one
Hill to another, over the lower ground or Valley between, which is a
handsome Amtiquity, and adds to the honour of this place. When
Mahomet the Firsl conquered this City, he placed a Colony os Aftaticks
in it, which makes it the more Tur kith. Great Actions have boon
performed hereabouts, in the time of the Romans, particulaily by Re-
gjliianus ; as is tcsbsied by Trelellius Pollio^ that he won so many Bat-
tles, and carried on such mighty tilings at Scupi, that he deserved a
Triumph. Hereabouts also slood Paratccpolis, and Ztlpianum.
The SanLtack of this Place is under the Begleileg os Rumelia or Gra-
cia. A Trade is driven from hence to Belgrade, and to Thessalonica ’or
Salonichi, and many other places. I have been more particular con-
cerning this City, because Geographers pass it over in a few words ; and
1 could never meet with any, who had been at it.
From hence we travelled toCatfhanich,^ Fortress that commands the
pasiageb.tween the Hills ; and-.afterwards advanced sofar, as to enter
the samous Plains of CcjJova in Bulgaria ; which seme take to be Campus
Merulre, a Plain not very much exceeding Lincoln Heath, yet the
Stage of great Actions. Here the greateft Christian Army, tl at was
ever brought into the Field in Europe, considing of sive hundred thou-
sand men, under Lazarus Dejpot os Serbia, fought with the Forces
of Amur ah the firsf, and lost the day. In which Battle Lazarus was
sain: and Amurah, viewing the dead bodies, was dabbed by Michael
Cobilouitz, a Christian Souldier, left for dead in the Field. Amurah
hath in these Plains a Memorial Monument unto this day ; and that
part is called the Field of the .Sepulchre: in the same Plains was
also fought that remarkable Battle between Hunniades and Mahomet, for
three days together ; where Hunniades, having very unequal Forcespwas
at lad over-thrown.
We proceeded forward to Preftina, a good Town, and where we ex-
pected good accommodation; but having entered into a fair Room,
we found a man lying down in it sick of the Plague. So we consulted
our safety, and Rayed not long ; and having a Gypfie to our Guide, we
travelled through a Country thinly inhabited, but sruitful and pleasant
and were much remedied with fair Ccrnelions, which grew plentisully
in the ways : we palled also by an hot Bath, a little on the right hand.
The Bath is an arched Room well built, and very refreshing unto Tra-
vellers. It hatha red’Sediment, and is impregnated with a fuccus lapide-
feens, and makes a gray Stone. It is within two hours going oi Bella-
cherqua or Cursumne, where lobserved a Convent and an old Church
with two handsom Towers: From whence palling over the Hill JaJne-
latz-pw came to A/AdTM between the two wr^uTs^nd so by a Callie
upon a Hill, near unto which is a noted Convent, wherein is kept the
body os Kenez Lazarus, and the body of St. Romanns, and so proceed-
ed. But I muR not forget to say something of Larifla.
