ASTRONOMY & ASTROLOGY

Johannes REGIOMONTANUS
Johann Muller, the Great German Astronomer, born at Kbnigs-
berg in Franconia in 1436, died at Rome in 1476.
5 Almanack ad annos XVIII accuratissime calculata. Augsburg, Erhard
Ratdolt, 1488.
4to. Goth. letter., 2 cols., 38 lines, 262 leaves. With many woodcut
diagrams. Wooden boards covered with brown blindstamped calf. Frs. 650.—
Hain*-Copinger 13795- Proctor 1875- Brit. Mus. Cat. II, 381.
The almanadi concludes the years 1489—1506, it is distributed into 18 quires of
14 leaves each. The introduction, 10 leaves, contains the tabula regionum, astrolo-
gical rules relating to pharmacy, to the sowing of trees and vine and
the prediction of weather. On the 10th leaf there is a horoscope woodcut, it is
not blank as the British Museum Catalogue states after its imperfect copy.
One of the first books printed after Ratdolt’s return to Augsburg, with types 4
and 9 he had brought from Venice.
Large clean copy with old notes on the title: „Est magistri cornelij roelans de
meddinijs &c.”. A piece of the blank part of leaf 11, 25 and 39 cut away.
No copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
6 Ephemerides seu Almanadi perpetuum. (Edited and published by J. L.
Santritter). Venice, Petrus Liechtenstein, 1498.
4to. Goth, letter, 122 unn. leaves with sign. With nice xylo-
graphic title. Contemporary wooden boards, back covered with brown
cloth. Frs. 600.—
Hain*-Cop. 13798. Proctor 5641. Brit. Mus. Cat. V, p. 578.
The only fifteenth century book which can definitely be connected with
Petrus Liechtenstein’s press, and the only edition of Regiomontanus’ „perpetual
Almanadi” printed before 1500.
Of some interest is the nice woodcut title, then follows a Tabula Climatum
& Paralellorum, on 1. 2VO there is an interesting table of towns of Europe and the
difference between the local times and a certain degree of longitude. On 1. 3 begins
a usual Calendar, after this follows a „Tabella Cicli Solaris & Lunaris”. On 1. 7 v. there
begins an explanation of this Almanadi with an addition of the editor Santritter. The
proper Almanadi begins on 1. 9, containing an extensive „ephemeris” giving for stated
times the apparent position of the Sun, the Moon and the Planets with data of eclipses,
conjunctions &c.
Petrus Liechtenstein was the son of Herman Liechtenstein who died in 1497.
Petrus seems at this period to have been a publisher rather than a printer. This is his
only book with a full colophon by him. Another book Aquinas (H. 1536) derived from
Mattaire is not certainly authenticated.
Quite extremely rare astronomical incunabulum. Rather waterstained
throughout, the upper margin from the last leaf torn off with loss of text on one page.
Small library stamp on title. The first and last leaves slightly dam. on margins.
Only one copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
See Reproduction, page 5.
