FIRST EDITION of this short epitome of theology written by the well-known
scholastic Guillaume d’Auvergne, containing the following interesting chapters: Aqua
rosacea quomodo fit. Astronomi. Canes moriuntur ex tristitia de morte dominorum
suorum. Demones. Fulgur quomodo fit. Judeorum error et fides. Lapidum pre-
ciosorum virtutes. Leprae signa, species et colores. Lex hebraeorum
est in multis absurda et ridiculosa. Machometi secta et errores. Me-
dic ina est scientia mortua. Menstruata q ual i t er m u n dab a t u r. Music a.
Seminii fluxus judicabatur in vetere lege immundus. &c. &c. In chapter
IX of the 6th part we find „vinea non debuit invenire lege seri altero semine” (See
Simon, Bibl. Bacchica, I, p. 93, no. 83).
Very fine clean copy with large margins. On the second leaf a ms. note dated
of 1500. Slightly stained.

Isidorus Hispalensis, One of the Foremost Theologians, Encyclo-
pedist and Philosopher, Archbishop of Sevilla, died in 636 A. D.

With 4 woodcuts, one of them giving a schematic map of the world,
showing Europe, Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean, the
whole surrounded by „Oceanus.”, the other three are tables
of descent. Orig. binding of wooden boards covered with blind stamped
brown calf, two brass pieces in the centre, clasps gone (repaired). Frs. 2000.—

The first dated edition of this curious mediaeval encyclopaedia, composed
about 600 and covering the whole range of know-ledge of the time. Of the twenty
books the first treats of Grammar, the third ofMathemtics and Astronomy,
the fourth of Medicine, the fifth of Law, the seventh of God and the angels,
the twelfth of Animals, the fourteenth of the Earth, Paradise, all the count-
ries of the world and the islands, the sixteenth on Minerals and Preci-
ous Stones, the nineteenth on Shipbuilding, Architecture and other
technological subjects. The work was written chiefly by Isidor of Sevilla and
was put in order and completed by Isidor’s friend and brother bishop, Saint Braulion
(ob. 646), whose name appears in the first sentence of the book.
In the colophon we read: „Per Gintherum zainer ex Reutlingen progenitum
literis impress! ahenis”, i. e. „printed with brazen letters”.
Good copy; two of the large woodcuts slightly repaired on the margins; slight
wormholes.
Very rare.
