The “Doctrinale puerorum”, a compendium of the latin language was one of the
most popular school books from the middle age till the 16th century. The great fa-
vour which enjoyed caused its rarety, most copies having been destroyed by use.
Only 4 copies of this edition are known, no one in the British Museum
nor in the Bodleiana.
Very fine copy with large margins and few old MS. notes, in its original
binding. Bound up with a imperfect copy of the “modus latinitatis”. Old stamp on
the title leaf. At the end a vellum leaf from a 13th century liturgical MS. is inserted.
In the front cover fragments of a coloured woodcut calendar are papered.

Nicolaus Wolff from Lutter in Brunswick. It is printed with his small Gothic text types
1 and 5. Wolff was one of the first printers in France who had introduced the small
character of the text type which lateron was used much more. Haebler, Die deutschen
Drucker im Auslande p. 229—33 examines thoroughly the importance of this printer for
the history of typography.

Rare and finely printed specimen of the Brescia-press of Boni-
nus de Boninis. This is his third product at Brescia. It contains numerous
Greek words.
The book is a valuable treatise, alphabetically arranged, giving the etymology
and the meaning of every word. It is an epitome of the celebrated work with the
above title, written by M. Verrius Flaccus, of which have been remained only a few
fragments. Festus’ work shows considerable light on the language, mythology and an-
tiquities of ancient Rome.
