ancient Rome. Exceptionally fine and very large copy.

pages numerous marginal and interlinear notes. A few wormholes.
No copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).

133 NONIUS MARCELLUS. De proprietate latini sermonis. Brescia, (Boninus de Boni-
nis), 1483. Fol. Rom. and Greek left, 11 unn., 126 num. 11. Rubr. Old MS.-vell. 120.-
Not in Hain. Cop. 4436. Proct. 6956.
Very finely printed specimen of a Brescia imprint, with full colo-
phon. This classic work is a sort of lexicon divided in 20 sections and also valuable as preserving
fragments from old dramatists, annalists, satirists, and antiquarian writers.
Very fine, clean and large copy. The lower blank margin of the first leaf mended.
134 TORTELLIUS, JOH. Orthographia dictionum e graecis tractarum. (Ed. by H i e r o n.
Albertucci Bononius). Venice, Hermann Liechtenstein, 1484. Fol. Rom. 198
unn. 11. (first and last blank). Wooden boards, back covered with vellum. 150.—•
H.*-C. 15569. Proct. 4787. BMC. V, 357.
Fine copy. The book ends with some noteworthy verses by the editor on the happy invention of
printing and the revolution effected by it.
135 — The same. Venice, Andreas de Paltasichis, 1488. Fol. Rom. 63—64 11., 185 unn. IL,
one of them blank, another blank wanting. In a beautiful contemporary North Ita-
lian binding of oak boards covered with delicately blind tooled brown calf, embossed
centre-piece and four corner-pieces. 450.—
H.*-C. 15571. Proct. 4780. BMC. V, 355.
A rare edition of Tortelli us ‘ cele. brated grammatical work, con-
taining also an extensive vocabulary of Greek words adopted by Latin. A tall and clean copy in a
beautiful state of preservation.
It is especially interesting on account of the fine original binding made probably in Northern
Italy. On the front cover we read the inscription: “lobes I ... us Vorthogan' “. A few insignifi-
cant scratches. — No copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
136 Valla, Laur. Elegantiarum latinae linguae opus. De reciprocatione sui et suits ad
Joh. Tortellium Aretinum. Venice, Bernardinus Rizus, 1491. Fol. Rom. 102
unn. 11., the last blank. Hf.-vellum. 100.—
H.*-C. 15817. Proct. 4960. BMC. V, 403.
Nicely printed edition of “De elegantiis“ by which Valla had won a high reputation. This work
subjected the forms of Latin grammar and the rules of Latin style and rhetoric to a critical exami-
nation, and placed the practice of composition upon a foundation of analysis and inductive reasoning.
A very large and fine copy, partlv with rough margins, and absolutely stainless.
Only one copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).'
