Ein Ansatz, der sich mit der Räumlichkeit des Wissens auseinandersetzt,
kann einerseits als analytische Methode, andererseits auch als Instrument zur
Theoriebildung fungieren. Die wissenschaftliche Fruchtbarkeit eines solchen
Ansatzes hängt allerdings davon ab, welche Raumkonzepte man verwendet und
ob es gelingt, eine Ontologisierung oder Substantialisierung des Raums zu ver-
hindern. In der Literatur findet man eine große Vielfalt von Raumbegriffen und
Raumkonzepten.12 Der Raum kann als „Element sozialer Kommunikation"13
aufgefasst werden. Miggelbrink schlägt vor, Raum als ein semantisches Konzept
der Ordnung zu begreifen, „in dem Physisch-Materielles als Element der Ord-
nung auftaucht, und dieser physisch-materielle Raum seinerseits etwas Seman-
tisches ist".14 Ob ein absolutes, ein relatives oder relationales Raumverständnis
adäquat ist, hängt in erster Linie von der wissenschaftlichen Fragestellung ab.
