Lindau

• . . . is situated on a little island at the eastern end of Lake
Consta nee, and is the southernmost town in Germany. Itfaces
the magniflcent ranges of the Swiss and Austrian Alps, and the
sight of the huge snow-capped peaks which are mirrored in
gently vibrating outlines on the placid waters of the Lake
is the earliest and perhaps the most lasting impression which
is made cn the stranger who Visits Lindau for the first time.

• This quaint and peaceful town has changed its appear-
ance but little during recent times. The dominant note is still
Struck by the old and beautiful buildings, of which the Town
Hall, more than 500 years old, with its magniflcent facades
and its wonderful frescoes is the most striking.

• A noticeable feature of the architecture in Lindau as in
Venice is the persistent recognition of the necessity for
economy of space due to the fixed area imposed by Nature.
A noticeable instance of this is found in the numerous streets
in which the side-walk is roofed over by the first storey of
the houses (see illustration), a feature which is somewhat
reminiscent of the Rows in Chester, yet which gives the town
a picturesque appearance which is all its own.

• Lindau lies on one of the old routes leading from the
North of Europe to Italy, a fact which has left many traces
on the architecture and atmosphere of the town.

• Lindau is a delightful holiday resort at all times of the
year. One of the loveliest of sights is the blossoming of the
apple-trees on the banks of Lake Constance in early Spring
viewed from Lindau Bridge. One need never be bored during
a so|ourn at Lindau, for there is an abundance of facilities
