o Thal, in spite of all the restrictions imposed
by the material, the personality of the artist can
find powerful expression through the medium
of stained glass work, without necessarily im-
pairing the characteristics of his picture, is shown
by the Christ Windows of Hermann Kaspar.
• The same freedom of composition and arran-
gement of colours which is a feature of Kaspar's
oil-paintings also expresses itself in his stained
glass work, and another frequent characteristic,
the absence of a gradual transition from one
colour to another in his paintings, gives him a
natural leaning towards stained glass work,
Kaspar has not merely created a decorated sheet
in this picture; on the contrary, the posture, ges-
ture and look of the re-arisenSavicur are formed
with a highly forceful expression. This expres-
sion, which can already be seen in the depicted
figure, is enhanced by the whole arrangement
of the coloured glass sheets, which, in their size
and form and the strength of their lead framing,
reveal an exceptionally rieh variety.
• This work which, regardless of all traditional
techtonical composition, expresses so powerfully
the rising, hovering and,at the same time,self-con-
tainedness, is a clear indication that even to-day
the possibilities of glass painting are not yet

▲ Daß bei aller strengen Bindung durch das
Material sich die Persönlichkeit des Künstlers
auch in der Glasmalerei sehr stark und eigen-
willig auswirken kann, ohne daß das Charak-
teristische des Glasbildes darunter leiden muß,
zeigt das Christusfenster Hermann Kaspars.
▲ Die gleiche Freiheit der Komposition und Lok-
kerheit der Farbstellung, die Kaspars Ölgemäl-
den eigen ist, spricht auch aus dieser Glasma-
lerei, wobei allerdings zu bemerken ist, daß die
oft flächige Art der Kasparschen Malerei dem
Verlangen der Glasmalerei entgegenkommen
mußte. Dabei ist keinerlei bloße Flächendekora-
tion geschaffen, sondern im Gegenteil Bewe-
gung, Haltung, Geste und Blick des Auferstehen-
den mit einem zwingenden Ausdruck gestaltet.
Diesem schon im Gegenständlichen sichtbaren
Ausdruck folgt der ganze Aufbau der farbigen
Glasflächen, die hier in ihrer Größe und in der
Form und Stärke ihrer Bleifassungen ungewöhn-
lich bewegt sind.
