The Early-Medieval Silver Hoard of Coins
and Omaments Found at “Babińskie Lasy”

INTRODUCTION
This early-medieval hoard containing silver omaments and coins is kept in the
collection of the Coin Room, National Museum in Kraków. The exact datę and the
circumstances of the find are not known. The Coin Room received it from Edward
Nepros in 1919.1 He was a renowned Warsaw-based numismatist as well as a collec-
tor of antiąuities, Polish art and memorabilia. The Inventory Department Day-Book
of the National Museum in Kraków records under February 17, 1919: “Nepros of
Warsaw (through W. Wittyg) donated: an excavated find from the tenth - eleventh
century, silver, Guberniya Kiev, found near the village Babińskie Tasy, compris-
ing 2 coins, 4 coin parts, 6 omaments in fragments.”2 The above-mentioned agent,
Wiktor Wittyg, was a collector and numismatist from Warsaw.3 There is a little
morę information in the entry no. N. I. 135642 of the MuseunTs Inventory Book:
