THE DUCAL GRIFFFN IN THE COINAGE OF WEST POMERANIA

had predominantly explored the medieval coinage of West Pomerania. The great-
est achievement of the German academic literaturę (until 1945) was the work by
H. Dannenberg,19 based on the entire body of the then known numismatic and
documentary materiał, determining the chronology and listing a catalogue of the
medieval coinage of West Pomerania. Following the year 1945, in conseąuence
of Poland’s acąuisition of a major part of West Pomerania, the amount of the Pol-
ish academic literaturę concemed with the West-Pomeranian coinage had been
steadily, but fairly slowly, growing. The research carried out by R. Kiersnowski20
led to the publication of a number of monographic dissertations, often providing
a yerification of H. Dannenberg’s findings. In the 1970s, the State of the knowl-
edge of the medieval coinage of West Pomerania was represented in the form of
a typological catalogue by E. Kopicki.21 In tum, J. Piniński22 summarized the histo-
ry of the West-Pomeranian coinage in a monograph for the generał public. Among
the German numismatists, only J. Hildisch23 madę an endeavour to explore the
modem West-Pomeranian coinage. In his publication of the collected materiał in
a catalogue arrangement, he featured the issues of the ducal coins after the death
of Bogislaw X. In the 1980s, R. Kiersnowski24 reverted to the subject of the West-
Pomeranian coinage in his great synthetic work, where he concisely discussed the
descent of the Griffin along with its emergence in the Pomeranian coinage. The
latest elaboration of the West-Pomeranian coinage is a new version of E. KopickEs
catalogue,25 wherein the author provided an array of considerable modifications
and supplements, according to the current State of the research.
This article features the numismatic materiał in the collections of the Na-
tional Museum in Szczecin. The coins subject to analysis are those representing
the regular catalogued collection with items of unknown origin (ca. 500 pcs) as
well as those from various finds containing multiple items: hoards and small-sized
finds (ca. 4500 pcs). In a number of instances, the imagery of the coins has been
juxtaposed with the sphragistic evidence kept at the State Archives in Szczecin.
