Some notes on Hans Strakowski, Simon Herle and architecture in Gdańsk c. 1600
This paper deals with the activities of Hans Strakowski and Simon Herle, who
played an important role in architecture and art in Gdańsk at the turn of the sixteenth
century. Their professional position and the works they conducted in the city are both
reassessed on the basis of extensive sources existing in the State Archive in Gdańsk.
New information pertaining to the workshop led by Strakowski in Gdańsk is dis-
cussed, along with the problem of the naturę of his involvement in the city s build-
ing enterprises from the first ąuarter of the seventeenth century. Particularly reveal-
ing is evidence from archival documents, concerning the work of Simon Herle. Long
believed to be only a woodcarver, Herle turns out to have also acted as an architect
involved in the construction of the Great Arsenał in Gdańsk, for which he prepared
plans and a model; apparently, he was also well acąuainted with geometry, mechan-
ics and even artilłery. The presented materiał points to the complexity of the building
process in early modern Gdańsk and to the versatility of the people who took part in it.
These issues are in turn analysed in the context of building practices in other Northern
European centres, particularly in the Low Countries.
