the Archbishop of Canterbury (the figure in the back-
ground.)

A Too Liberal Tory.—Mr. Albert Grant, elected
for Kidderminster, was unseated on petition, for treating.

Quite T’other.—Mr. Burges was the architect con-
sulted about the internal decoration of St. Paul’s, built by
Sir Christopher Wren.

De Groof.—A Belgian (“The Plying Man”), who,
while attempting to descend by a newly-invented para-
chute from a balloon, which had ascended from Oremorne
Gardens, fell to the ground, and was killed. He had for
several years been constructing an apparatus, with which
he believed it possible to imitate the flight of a bird.

( A Name of Omen. ) An obscure fanatic, Kullmann,
( Blood and Iron. ) had made an attempt on the
life of Prince Bismarck, by firing at him as he was
driving near Kissingen. “ Blood and Iron ” (». e. a war
policy) was a phrase fathered on Bismarck during the
Franco-German war. Once before Bismarck's life had
been attempted.

A Song after Sunset.—Here and elsewhere the reference
is to a sensational account, in the Daily Telegraph, of
a fight, said to have taken place at Hanley, between a
dwarf, “Brummy,” and a bull-dog, “Physic.” It was
written by Mr. Greenwood, “the Amateur Casual.”

( A Regal Example. ) The Lord Mayor (Lusk) had been
( Lusk et Lux. ) entertaining many leading repre-

sentatives of literature, art, and music at the Mansion
House.

A Bubble Company, &c.—The allusion is to the newly
introduced effervescing mineral water, “ Apollinaris,”
supplied by a Company.

A Real Conservative Revival {Cartoon).—See “Es-
sence of Parliament,” p. 56 (Monday)—“ Among the many
Disenchantments. ’ ’

j “Salopienses Flagellati.” ) The Head Master of Shrews-
( Kennedy Corrected. ) bury School (Dr. Moss)

had been attacked in the local papers for flogging a boy,
named Loxdale, to excess, as the number of cuts which he
received might have seemed to imply. But the boy appeared
to have been but little the worse for the flogging; and it
was openly hinted that the Head Master’s arm was not
over vigorous — very inferior to his predecessor’s, Dr.
Kennedy.

| Looking over Lincoln. ) A clergyman, in the dio-
( A Little Lay of Lincoln. ) cese of Lincoln, having
refused to allow the title of “ Reverend ” to be given to
a Wesleyan minister on a gravestone, which he had erected
in memory of his daughter, the minister (Mr. Keet) ap-
pealed to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop
of Lincoln ; and a correspondence took place, in which the
Bishop denied the right of Wesleyan ministers to assume
the title in dispute.

{ Democritus at Belfast. ) Professor Tyn-

( An Old Song for New Savants. [ dale’s address at
Belfast, as President of the British Association, was memor-
able for its controversial results. He “ventured on the
mysterious ground of original causality, and expressed

opinions in favour of materialism which, with whatever
qualifications he guarded them, still gave serious alarm to
the religious world.”—Annual Register.

The Point of Attack.—See “ The Tourney against the 85
Turf,” p. 57.

A Problem for Brentford.—The management of the 88
Brentford Guardians had been called in question, as re-
garded the pauper infants in the Workhouse.

A Safe Resting-Place.—Another Roman Catholic Pil- 101
grimage had been organised, to the shrine of St. Edmund
of Abingdon, at Pontigny in France.

Stroud—an Ode.—Stroud was notorious for its election 102
petitions.

Mosquito-phobia.—See also “Old Friends with a New 104

Name” {small cut), p. 102.

j Glee, &c. ) This appears to have 107

( “ Sick and (not) Sorry ” {Cartoon). ) been a very bad 109
grouse season.

The Brussels Conference.—See “Essence of Parlia- 112
ment,” p. 13 (Friday)—“We have decided.” The Con-
ference was held at Brussels.

“ The Busy B.” {Cartoon).—For Spain and Prince Bis- 119
marck see “ Introduction.”

Literary Intelligence. — The “ Septennate ” was the 122
term of seven years for which Marshal MacMahon was
constituted President of the French Republic. It com-
menced in 1873.

The New Steamer.—The twin-ship Castalia, specially 131
constructed for the Channel passage, on a principle designed
to prevent the rolling motion, which is the principal cause
of sea-sickness.

Rome on Robinson.—Refers to the recent perversion of 131
the Marquis of Ripon (whose family name is Robinson)
to the Church of Rome.

Motto for the Lord Mayor Elect.—The Lord Mayor 147
Elect was a Lawyer.

( Our Merchant Navy {Cartoon). ) The Duke of Edin- 149
( Edinburgh at Liverpool. ) burgh had been at 153

Liverpool. One object of this visit was to open a Seamen’s
Orphanage.

The Shah’s Diary.—Refers to an English translation of 158
a Diary of the Shah of Persia., kept by him during his
visit to Europe, published in London this year.

The Unsuspected Torpedo {Cartoon).—Early in the 160
morning of the 2nd of this month (October) a dreadful
explosion took place on the Regent’s Canal, Regent’s Park.

A barge laden with four tons of gunpowder blew up near
the North Lodge Bridge, at the end of the Avenue Road.

The explosion produced a perfect panic in the neighbour-
hood, and, indeed, alarmed London generally. The de-
struction of property in and around the Park was very
serious, and the three men in the barge lost their lives.

( Greg as Cassandra. ) Refer to some gloomy predic- 166
( “ Rocks Ahead.” ) tions, as to the condition of 173
England in the future, contained in a book, published by
the well-known writer, Mr. W. R. Greg, under the title
of Rocks Ahead ; or, the Warnings of Cassandra.

The One Exception.—There had been a contested elec- 166
tion for Northampton. Mr. Mere wether was the suc-
cessful candidate.
