§ VIII. — In 1883, I copied the following inscription on the back of a seated figure
of black granité, found among the ruins of the temple, within the town at EL-Kal) :

of 1895-1896, Mr. Somers Clarke found in the same place, in front of the sanctuary of
Ramses II, the seated figure of a scribe, of black granité. On the lap is the following
inscription :

§ IX. — On the West bank at Silsilis, is a Greek inscription accompanying the
reliefs of a dom-palm on the one side, and a boy with a bull on the other. It is
iiven in Lepsius, Denkmàler, VI, 82, Greek, 188; but the copy is so imperfect as to
be unintelligible. The inscription is realf as follows :
(1) To 7rpo<r(2)xov]r)|ia [As]-(3) wvtSou xi>êe(4)pvi),cdo NeiXou (5) Ato; îtaXou[[Jisvou] (6) Nêcpwxou toj
(7) [[*]eYt<rcou (8) li Toaiavou -/.a-. (9) [ua]po'jt; (sic) tou xup-.ou. There is a similar graffito of a
« pilot of the Nile » at Phihe. Nephôtês is a god, and therefore cannot be identificd
with Nebhat, as lias been proposed1. The lOth year of Trajan is A. D. 108.
The Greek graffito at the southern corner of the speos of Hor-em-heb lias not
hitherto been copied. I hâve succeeded in deciphering it as follows :
