vi PREFACE.

The more authentic record, therefore, of these investigations, by those who participated in them, has long
been a desideratum, and, it must be confessed, has been too long promised ; but the performance has been
delayed, first, from the unfortunate death of the accomplished Baron Haller, who proposed to join the Editor
in this country for the purpose ; and, secondly, from the constant engagement of the latter in an arduous
profession; unassisted by the leisure and the funds necessary to prosecute a work of such expense and importance.
But the "Exemplaria Grseca" are of all time, and ever acceptable, and the Editor is happy in having
accomplished, however tardily and imperfectly, a debt due equally to the public and to his worthy associates
in these enterprises.

He rejoices on this occasion to express his great obligations to the late William Hamilton, Esq., formerly
Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, a friend removed from us while these sheets were passing through
the press, and to whose zeal and influence in charging him with despatches for our Embassy at Constantinople
in 1810, these interesting discoveries are due. He is happy in presenting the above Portrait in memory
of his colleague in this work, the amiable and accomplished Baron Haller. He begs also to express
his acknowledgments to those gentlemen who have subscribed in aid of this publication: and especially to
W. W. Lloyd, Esq., for his constant encouragement and for the learned commentary which he has been pleased
to add to the present volume ; and finally to Mr. E. Walford, M.A., of Balliol College, Oxford, for his
superintendence of the labours of the press.
