GKW. III. 3422. Hain (not seen) 2519. Maittaire IV p. 710. La Caille, p. 41.
The most celebrated encyclopaedia of the Middle Ages. Our edition is certainly one of the most
interesting and most complete one in the French language of the 15 th century. It contains not
only all illustrations found in a few other editions printed at Lyons, but also a 17-page supplement
illustrated by 2 further cuts, here printed for the first time.
This most interesting encyclopaedia was written in the 14 th century by the English Franciscan
Friar, Bartholomeus, theologian and more especially natural philosopher at Paris (1225—30)
and Magdeburg (1230—75). It embraces the entire scientific knowledge of that period. There are thus
to be found many important chapters on the Natural Sciences, e. g. Botany, Astronomy, Meteorology,
Mineralogy, etc., Music, Hunting, Geography with topographical descriptions of ‘Asia4, ‘Alemania4,
‘Britania‘ etc. and especially on Medicine and Anatomy. The cut at the beginning of this section re-
presents an anatomical scene with 5 surgeons and a corpse, the viscera exposed Book VII treats on
different diseases, e. g. diseases of the eyes, teeth etc. The cut to this book represents a sickroom.
The interesting supplement is printed here for the first time, likewise the greater part of the
curious cuts.
The state of preservation of the copy is excellent; a few very small wormholes run through the
first and last leaves and a few leaves have insignificant stains from use. The cuts are all
entirely uncoloured.
Only 4 other copies of this important and interesting work are known of which two are not
complete.
See Reproduction, Plates 7 & 8.

Very nice edition of these famous Proverbs and Sentences in form of Distichs, being partly very
interesting for medicine and natural sciences. The Disticha and the extensive commentary deal a. o.
with the following subjects: dormitio, ebrietas, egritudo, gula, homo, medicina medicus, memoria,
menstrua, oculi, senex, sobrietas, somnia vinum, vulnera, etc. Very large, partly uncut copy.

H.-C. 4838. Proct. 5316. BMC. V, 498.
The most valuable depository of the anatomical knowledge of the last century B. C. is the work
of Celsus, one of the most judicious medical authors of antiquity. Good, complete copy.
See Reproduction, Plate 20.
113 ISIDORES OF SEVILLA. Etymologiarum libri XX. Augsburg, Gunther Zainer, 1472.

Hain 9273. Proct. 1532. BMC. II, 317. Schreiber 4266. Osler, Inc. med. 13.
The first dated edition of this curious mediaeval encyclopaedia, composed about 600 A. D. Of the
twenty books the first treats of Grammar, the third of Mathematics and Astronomy,
the fourth of Medicine, the twelfth of Animals, the fourteenth of the Earth, Paradise,
all the countries of the world and the islands, the sixteenth on Minerals and
Precious Stones, the nineteenth on Shipbuilding, Architecture and other
technological subjects.

small illustr. Old oaken boards, the back covered with blind stamped pigskin,

Hain* 9274. Proct. 7580. BMC. Ill 787.
The chapter about the weights is illustrated by a pen-drawn lever-scale. From the same hand
there are few MS. notes and underlinings.
An interesting imprint, as Proctor and Voullieme attribute it to Amerbach, but in the British
Museum Catalogue it is ranking among the doubtful products of Furter.
Large and clean binding, only few leaves slightly stained on margins, in its original binding.
Only one copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
