Practische Abhandlung über Dampfwagen auf
Eisenbahnen.

Der vollständige Titel dieser so eben (Anfangs 1836) zu London erschie-
nenen Schrift ist in seiner ganzen, nach der Gewohnheit englischer Bücher
etwas beträchtlichen Länge folgender:
A practical Treatise on locomotive öngines upon r all-
way s; a work intended to shoiv the construction, the mode of acting,
and the effect of those engines in conveying heavy loads; to give
the means of ascertaining, on an inspection of the machine, the ve-
locily with which it teilt draw a given load, and the results it teilt
produce under various circumstances, and in different localities; to
determine the quantity of fuel and water it will require; to fix the
proportions which ougth to be adopted in the construction of an en-
gine, to make it answer any intended purpose etc. With practical
tables, giving at once the results of the formulae; founded upon a
great many new experiments, made on a large scale, in a daily
practice on the Liverpool and. Manchester railway, with many dif-
ferent engines and considerable trairis of carriages. To which is
added an appendix, showing the expense of conveying goods by lo-
comotive engines on railroads. By the Cher. F. M. G. de Pam-
bour, formerly a Student of the Ecole polytechnique, late of the
royal artillery, on the staff, in the French Service, knight of the ro-
yal ordre of the Legion d’honneur etc. during a residence in England

Die Schrift giebt aber in der That nicht allein, was der Titel ver-
spricht, sondern sie handelt auch ihren Gegenstand wirklich practisch und
wissenschaftlich zugleich ab: nicht blofs empy risch, und auch nicht blofs
mathematisch. Sie hält sich an der Erfahrung und wendet auf dieselbe die
Mathematik nur so an, wie es in solchen Fällen immer geschehen sollte,
nemlich von derselben nicht sowohl die Form und Formeln, sondern den
Geist. Dabei hat sie das Verdienst grofser Deutlichkeit, ohne dieselbe
in der Weitschweifigkeit zu suchen, wo sie nicht zu finden ist. Sie läfst
sich, weder absichtlich, noch aus Bequemlichkeit, Undeutlichkeit zu Schul-
