LIBERTY FILES THE AUSTRIAN BARS.
Mb. Punch's Artist presents his compliments to Fbancis Joseph,
the "hope"—(upon the verac'ty of lhat most respectable, and happily,
moat retired peer, cow somewhere in the Grampian Hills, the Earl op
Aberdeen)—especially the "hope" of Austria (hope told a flattering
fib!), and offers him the accompanying design for a historical cartoon
to decorate any or all of his palaces, in Vienna, at Scboabrunn, in
Peslh, in Venice, or elsewhere.
His Imperial Majesty may deign to condescend to lemember a
cert aid Italian, named Felice Obsini, late a tenant of o e of His
Majesty's many gaols (strong abiding-places for liberty-loving rebels),
but now of London. The aroresaid Eelice, in no way having before
him the fear of the wrath of his Imperial master, only too careful of
petulant people who do not know what is good for them, especially
when administered by careful gaolers and vigilant turnkey s,—the
aforesaid Felice, spurning the hospitality of hia Sovereign, and no
doubt assisted by the Evil One, did with audacious industry, and
rebellious perseverance, file through the bars of his stone apartment,
and assisted by ill-disposed people (where will they go to PJ did daringly
steal his freedom, the theft being secured to him on the cold, s il of
misty England; secured to the aforesaid robber of freedom in c mtemot
and in despite of Francis Joseph of Austria, his buridredi o" thousands

bitter truth, a nauseous reality to be chewed in the legteiarate month,

Whereupon, Mr. Punch's Artist has Ibought the historic fad. in eye?y
way worihy of graphic history : to which end he has ventured a little
to enlarge and sublime the subject, by merging the individual in the
general. His Imperial Majesty will therefore be graciously pleased to
accept the accompanying design, not as the representation of one bare
fact, but as a hopeful allegory of a coming national truth. Thus
it is humbly hoped thaf, his Imperial Majesty may gather from
the contemplation of the picture a modicum of humanity and wisdom,
to serve him against any possible stress. To which like end a copy
may be forwarded to his* fraternal Majesty, the King op Naples.
If, however, the Emperor op Austria should refuse to accept the
accompanying design for the embellishment of all or ary of his many
palaces, Mr. Punch begs leave to dedicate it, 11 st and especially—
