§ XI. — In the désert westof Faras in Nubia, nearly a mile from the bank of the
Nile, is a tomb which has been used as a Coptic ch'urch, and its walls are covered with
Coptic inscriptions, ail of which I copied. The three most noteworthy are as follows :

This seems to give the date A. D. 739. — Tins inscription is on the south wall,
and is sixth in order from the eastern side of the tomb.
The second inscription, which is on the west wall, is a Coptic version of the
famous Letter of Abgarus.
