• The Relief by Ernst Andreas Rauch, of Munich, is a typical
example ot how architectural sculpture is subject to different
laws from those governing free plastic art.
• The solid stone, the artistic form and the decorative details,
such as inscriptions, must form a new unit, and may not Inter-
rupt unduly the continuity of the wall-surface and the larger
cubic effect of the architecture. This rule was strictly adhered
to du ring the Early Romanesque period. For the above reasons
a Relief such as thatdepicted here should neverbe naturalistic.
• Ernst A. Rauch's power of working in the naturalistic style,
however, is shown in the rough Head of a Herdsman, in
which the dull life of the land-worker is excellently charac-
terised. The treatmenf of the stone surface in the rugged
countenance and the shaggy hair makes a natural but strik-
ing contrast.

setzen gearbeitet sein muß, als eine Freifigur.
▲ Steinmasse, künstlerische Gestaltung und dekorative Zu-
taten, wie Inschrift, müssen zu einer neuen Einheit zusammen-
gehen, die Mauerfläche und Architekturmasse nicht unnötig
unterbrechen, ein Gesetz, wie es besonders stark in der alten
romanischen Kunst innegehalten wurde. Aus diesem Grunde
darf ein solches Architekturrelief nicht naturalistisch sein.
▲ Daß Rauch auch naturalistischer arbeiten kann, zeigt der
derbe Hirtenkopf, in dem die dumpfe Lebensart eines bäuer-
lich Gebundenen trefflich charakterisiert ist.
