Two Municipal Seals of Wąwolnica
Summary
Wąwolnica was one of the oldest municipalities in the Lublin region during the Middle
Ages. In the course of its history, the town used two different municipal seals. The first,
and older, seal of Wąwolnica is about 64 mm in diameter and it bears a legend in cap-
itals with some elements of uncial writing S(IGILLUM)*CIVITATIS*DE*KVNIGISBER
G* (Seal of the City of Kunigisberg). The other seal of Wąwolnica, with the inscription
“SIGILLUM OPPIDI WAVELNICENSIS” along the surround, is about 34 mm in diam-
eter. It bears a depiction of St. George, facing left, slaying the dragon. A survey of the rele-
vant source materiał has found an image of the seal (S(IGILLUM)*CIVITATIS*DE*KV
NIGISBERG*) in a document attesting the authenticity of an ownership title issued by
the municipal court of Wąwolnica in the early 15th century. Thanks to this discovery, it
has been found that the earliest evidence of the Wąwolnica seal dates from 1424, not from
the years 1581-1582, as previously believed. [MF]
