By far the strongest argument in favour of Professor Sethe's reading of the word
for "king" is the variant ^ ol\^or T <■> A ctUQ^e(^ ^y M. Lacau from an
early sarcophagus (Cairo 28121) in Recueil de Travaux, vol. 35 (1913), p. 228. In so
stereotyped a formula there can surely be no question of a substitution of one word for
another, so that the équivalence of and y\ is hereby demonstrated. The
latter must be an unetymological writing of the former; for the variation of —and

Another possible confirmation is the writing of the proper name (j

^MI^hJ^l *n Ptolemaic demotic papyri by signs which in hieroglyphic would

read _o@(j ^ see Griffith, Rylands Papyri, p. 448. For it

must be carefully noted that the demotic writing of the name is no mere phonetic
transcript of the contemporary pronunciation of the name, which was ne-cefie<n:ou<; ; the
scribe may well have been influenced by the belief that 1 "king" contained the

M. Jean Clédat a récemment publié ici même1, parmi d'autres monuments de
l'isthme de Suez, un petit objet assez énigmatique en son genre et qu'il n'a pas iden-
tifié. Je voudrais démontrer dans la présente note que les données du problème sont,
cependant, suffisamment nombreuses et précises pour permettre une solution sinon
irréprochable de tout point, du moins acceptable en majeure partie, à ce qu'il me
semble. C'est mon maître, M. Loret, qui a attiré mon attention sur ce petit problème;
de plus, il a bien voulu diriger mes recherches. Je lui en exprime ma bien vive recon-
naissance.
