Summary
In order to safeguard the conservation of medieval wall paint-
ings, which in itself is extremely sporadic, it is of the utmost
importance to illustrate the link between ecclesiastical and
creative cause. One has to contain the meaning of ’’originality”
in a broad sense because the term ’’original wall painting”
surpasses the comprehension of a painted surfacelayer.
Moreover the entire process laying out the details, for the
adjacent architectural areas is involved. Additionally the normal
"aging process” and the development of restauration work
have to be considered respectively.
Out of these findings three vital points concerning the compre-
hension of the term "originality” can be deduced, which are
to be found at three randomly chosen but exemplatory loca-
tions in Lower Saxony:
1. Neuwerkkirche in Goslar I urban district of Goslar: under
the aspect of how the restauration work has influenced
the state of original wall painting.
2. Ev.-ref. Kirche in Krummhörn-Eilsum / rural district of Au-
rich: under the aspect of what amount of surface area can
still be regarded as authentic original.
3. Alte Kirche in Wunstorf-Idensen / rural district of Hanover:
under the aspect of the discrepancy between current state
of the wall paintings and the way they were actually created.
