Summary
The major part of Danish parish churches consists of Ro-
manesque buildings with Gothic additions. In approx. 700
churches mural paintings are preserved, Romanesque as well

as Gothic and mural paintings from Lutheran times after 1536.
Not until the 18th century the paintings were whitewashed.
Some mural paintings were never whitewashed but apart from
these the uncovering of wallpaintings began in the middle of
the 19th century, and still today several paintings, are being
found underneath the whitewash.
In some cases mural paintings uncovered during recent years
are left without being retouched. Even minor fragments of
untouched mural paintings are considerably valuable. They
may provide important information regarding the history of
technology, painting technique and style; analyses may be
carried out, and binding medias may be identified.
A catalogue of original - i. e. never overpainted or retouched
- mural paintings from Northern Europe is proposed. It would
create possibilities of comparative studies, most important for
both conservator and art historian.
