Address to the Conference
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
The minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Democratic Republic of the Sudan
Η. E. Sir-el-Khatim El-Khalifa has instructed me to attend this international Conference of great
importance regarding the advancement of Nubian Studies and to address you on his behalf. Thus it
is a great priviledge to be present at this gathering of scholars of world renown, and it pleases me to
convey to you the warm greetings and sincere good wishes of Η. E. Sir el-Khatim El-Khalifa for the
success of this Conference.
With the beginning of the international Campaign to save the Antiquities of Nubia from the waters
of the Asswan High Dam has began a period of friendly relations and close co-operation between the
Polish People’s Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Sudan in the field of archaeological
research. The fruitful results of this friendly association of our two nations are manifold and great.
These will certainly remain as the best guiding example of what co-operation and freindship between
peoples may produce for the good of humanity. The great and exciting discovery at Faras of the Polish
Expedition under the Directorship of Professor Michalowski, the eminent scholar and the great friend
of the Sudan Antiquities Service, is now well known throughout the world and has definitely
revolutionize our knowledge of the history and art of Christian Nubia. The invaluable help Professor
Michalowski has been rendering to the Sudan in form of chemicals and other materials needed
for the conservation of Faras frescoes in Khartoum is an unforgetable token of good friendship
and clearly manifests that the Polish Nation is keen to save and preserve human cultural heritage
whatever Nationality it may belong to.
The conservation of the share of the Sudan from the mural paintings of Faras and exhibiting them in
the Gallery of Sudan National Museum by Polish Experts remain as the best material testimony for
co-operation between our two countries.
And yet not to be forgotten is the great work still being done by the Polish Expedition at Old Dongola.
Thus it pleases me very much, Mr. Chairman, to assure you that the Sudanese people greatly appreciate
the work of your people in the Sudan to assist our country in saving, preserving and searching for its
cultural heritage.
Now, if I may seize this opportunity, Mr. Chairman, I consider suitable to make a statement on the
present policy of my Government regarding archaeological work in the Sudan. The Government of
the Democratic Republic of the Sudan attaches great value to archaeological research in the Sudan
as a necessary and fundamental instrument to uncover the cultural heritage of the nation which it
considers highly essential for developing and building modern Sudan.
Hence, it gives me great pleasure to declare before you, on behalf of Η. E. Sir-el-Khatim El-Khalifa,
that interested archeological institutions are cordially invited to work in the Sudan and that they are
assured of every possible help and facility from the Sudan Government and the Antiquities Service
as well.
To close, Mr. Chairman, I would like to express my personal profound gratitude to the authorities
of the Polish People’s Republic, the distinguished participants of this Conference, and last but not
the least, to Professor Michalowski and the organizers of the Conference for the golden opportunity
they are now offering us to increase our knowledge and to promote the interest of the world in
general in Nubian Studies.
