Siemiradzki all soul loved "nature-morte"...
Since the second half of the 19th century, the entire artistic world was fascinated by the research of ancient
history, and the painters wrote with passion the canvases dedicated to the ancient heroes and their great
deeds. In the competitive work of Henryk Siemiradzki, performed in the best traditions of academicism,
there was no longer a dominant manner of “Briullov style”, on the contrary, the young artist showed in his
creation his individuality, which is already characteristic of the already established historical artist. Five
Trusts were written for the competition, but against their backdrop, the work of Siemiradzki was clearly
marked out. The picture was arranged according to all the laws of academic painting, and although it
lacked elements of innovation, it differed from other competitive works by the skill of performance and
the virtuosity of the picturesque solution of numerous details that amazed with their archaeological per-
suasiveness. The mastery of the artist here was coupled with a profound knowledge of the subject. The
development of the first quality was promoted by the academic system of art education, and the formation
of the second one was promoted by the fact that from the very first days of its existence the Academy of
Arts had within its walls not only an excellent library, but also the richest collections of paintings, sculp-
tures and arts and crafts.
