Motifs of antique architecture in the Creative work
of Henryk Siemiradzki
Henryk Siemiradzki received a comprehensive education based on antique culture in its wider sense.
Having become a professional artist, he mostly involved himself with themes and subjects related to the
art of Ancient Greece and Romę, including in his works the best specimens of antique architecture. His
meticulous approach to solving problems is proven by the fact that he not only scrutinized books on the
architecture of the period of his concern, but actively travelled to the cradles of ancient civilization. For
instance, for the creation of his canvas Phryne at the Poseidonia in Eleusis the artist went to Greece, to
see the ancient Eleusis - the site of famous Eleusinian mysteries. In that remarkable land he also visited
the tempie of Poseidon at Cape Sounion that is surrounded by numerous legends, probably becoming
acquainted with the texts of ancient authors about the tempie. He then depicted it in one of his most
poetic canvases, dedicated to the legendary beauty Phryne.
The Altar of Apollo at the foot of mount Parnassus became the centrepiece of his multi-figure com-
position The Muses on Parnassus adorning the curtain of the Opera Theater in Lviv.
Considering a number of other works by Siemiradzki, it can be concluded that architecture played
a significant role in the Creative oeuvre of this ardent admirer of beauty in art and often served as the main
background of his canvases depicting antique scenes.
