ITTSBURGH ANNUAL
EXHIHITION OF PICTURES.
Instead of the usual dispiay of inter-
national contemporary art, the exhibition at the
Carnegie Institute this year is made up of a ioan
coiiection, the pictures being for the most part lent
by private coliectors. A iarge proportion of these
are owned in Pittsburgh and its vicinity, and afford
striking testimony to the rapid growth in our coun-
try of a iove for pictures, and, more than that, of a
growing appreciation of good ones. For the stand-
ard represented in this exhibition is a high one,
punctuated by two exceedingiy Ane Corots and

severai very important Daubignys; at ieast one
very important Diaz, the <y** -5o^g77??'<?7?f;
and a superb marine by DuprC. Among other
exceptionai pictures one may mention two by Frans
Ha!s; a portrait and a madonna by Van Dyck ; a
MuriHo; notabie examptes of the eariy English
masters, Hogarth, Gainsborough, Romney, and
ConstaMe ; a superb Ruisdae!; and a fine Hobbema.
This is but a sprinkling of names in a catalogue
which contains one hundred and iifty-five works,
and inctudes examples by a number of the leading
Frenchmen of the nineteenth century, not omitting
two beautifui ones by Monet.
The American representation is not a large one,
though Whistler is seen in two nocturnes ; Inness
in LYrw/iM TXc U<777??'7?^* A'XoK?<77', and 7??
?*X<7 U?//oy,- Wyant in T/i7<777/?jp%/ ??77<7 Avw/ and

Brush, A<77-/<7/*^47??'K<<77y and ?X<7 77^/i?7?/<? bv WiHiam
M. Chase, and a portrait of Mr. Andrew Carnegie
by John W. Alexander comptete the iist.
So meagre a showing very inadequately expresses
the achievements of American painting, the interest
which Americans fee! in it, or the growing attention
it is receiving frorn American coHectors.
