ment [for the first time] (2)."
Thèse three lines face in the opposite direction to 11. 4-24, and consequently form
a short inscription apart from them. The grammatical construction — a substantive
used absolutely, (tp rd) with two parallel infinitives, also used absolutely, (stl and relit)
■— is that peculiar to titles (cf. Sethe, Verbum, II, § 549). The inscription is therefore
the title, or explanatory heading, to the picture, the fragments of which are repre-
sented on pl. IX.
Picture and title together furnish the circumstances under which the speech of the
king, recorded in the longer inscription, 11. 4-24, was delivered. The king sits within
a richly ornamented pavilion in the wlh-h&M of the palace. The picture represented
Rekhmere standing before him, but this figure has been erased. The courtiers, we are
told, hâve been assemblée! to take part in the ceremony. Doubtless they stood behind
Rekhmere; but they found no place in the picture.
