Polish architects' scientific travels in Western Europę
in the 19th century
A group of Polish architects, who within the scientific travels were educated and worked in Western
Europę, was relatively numerous. The difficult political situation in the country after the defeat of the
national uprisings also forced some builders-insurgents to emigrate to the West, where they were able to
continue the architectural practice and develop work experience.
Essential for the formation the artistic attitudes of beginning architects were study trips to European
capitals, in order to gain a broader education, fili in the gaps in the preparation of professional knowledge
of modern construction trends, studying the latest literaturę, and finally - visiting famous monuments
and valuable art collections. Furthermore, longer stays in the centers of artistic life offered an opportunity
to take practice under the guidance of renowned and respected artists, for example Henri Labrouste or
Eugene Viollet-le-Duc.
Architects of the Polish Kingdom journeyed abroad also on scholarships funded by the government
or academic institutions. These educational trips were usually taken for the realization a specific aim, for
example: to get familiar with innovative technological and building materia! Solutions, used in construc-
tion or assimilate methods of teaching architecture at technical universities in Berlin, Paris, Romę, Munich
or Yienna. For a multitude of architects, employed in the tsarist administration of the Polish Kingdom,
the only opportunity to get to know other countries was a several-months leave.
