The Memoirs of Alexis Gritchenko as the Source
for the History of the School of Paris
Ukrainian artist Alexis Gritchenko (1883-1977) was an active participant of the avant-garde movement
in Moscow in the 191 Os. He left Soviet Russia in 1919 and came to Paris ar the end of 1921, linking his
life and work with France. Following the example of Delacroix whom he admired in his youth, Gritchenko
kept diaries for many years. Due to these records he could publish later several books of his memoirs: Two
Years in Constantinople (1930), Ukrainę of my blue days (1957), My Encounters with French Artists (1962,
1968 - Eng.), The Years of Storm and Stress (1967). These rare publications in Ukrainian and French
are the valuable resource not only for the authors biography. They contain interesting facts and descrip-
tions of some iconic characters that came to Paris from Poland and from Russia: Moise Kisling, Leopold
Zborowski, Sonia Lewitska, Haim Soutine and others. This information deserves to be introduced in
a wide scholarly use. Gritchenkos approach to “conservation” of documentation about himself and his
work is also interesting. He established his own Foundation at the Ukrainian Instirute in New York, which
was transferred to the National Art Museum in Kyiv in 2006. The “construction” of autobiographies by
the postmodern artists had relied upon the experiences ofmodern artists. Gritchenkos heritage is aspecific
example of artist-emigrant, which expands our understanding of the phenomenon of the artist of Ecole
de Paris.
