The Capital Cathedrals of the Two Nations: An Introduction

The histories of the cathedrals of Kraków and Vilnius have been tackled many
times, but never in connection with each other. Meanwhile, numerous issues con-
cern both cathedrals, located in the two Capital cities of the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth: the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Both
churches played—and still play—a significant role in shaping the national con-
sciousness of Lithuanians and Poles. The ties between them existed at the level of
diocesan ordinaries and cathedral chapters. Morę detailed research is needed on
the issues that arose in the period of the Partitions of Poland and the emergence
of the independent States of Poland and Lithuania after 1918. The fate of both
churches during World War II, after the war, under the communist regimes in the
Polish Peoples Republic and the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as
after both countries regained sovereignty deserve a closer look. Posing the same
ąuestions in regard to both cathedrals and recognizing the likenesses and dif-
ferences between them opens new scholarly perspectives. Polish and Lithuanian
specialists in various fields convened at an academic conference devoted to the
two Capital cathedrals held 2016 in Vilnius, producing many interesting results.
This volume presents the findings of the Polish scholars.
