ruling centre in any pari of Syria^; and I think ihat any by-
pothesis which expiains ihe origin ofthese Syro-Cappadocian
monuments in Asia Minor must take account of tbis fact.
Before any inference can be drawn from the monuments of
this early period, it is necessary to have trustworthy repre-
sentations of them. In tbe hope of correcting some faise im-
pressions derived from tiie pubiisbed iiiustrations, and of
adding some further Information about tbem, I publish the
