DESIDERATA IN AMERICAN PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE
be following list was prepared by Mr. George H. Story in con-
sultation witb tbe following Trustees: Frederick Dielman, Presi-
dent of tbe National Academy of Design, Daniel Cbester Frencb
and Robert W. de Forest, Secretary. It contains tbe names of
some of tbe best=known deceased American artists, wbo eitber are not at all
or are not adequately represented in tbe Museum collections. It is believed
tbat tbe Museum sbould bave in its galleries at least one or two distinctly
cbaracteristic pictures of tbose artists wbo represent bistorically tbe develop-
ment of American painting. Tbere are included in tbe list tbose artists wbo
are now represented, it may be, by several pictures, but of wbom tbe Museum
would be glad to bave one or more works wbicb may be distinctly classed
as masterpieces. Tbe more important names are indicated witb an asterisk:
