La vie des steppes Kirghizes of Bronisław Zaleski
The artistic work of Bronisław Zaleski (1820-1880) has not been given a wider study, therefore this artist
is still little-known. His artistic activity in exile between 1861-1880 include pictures, etchings, literary
illustrations.
The biggest achievement of Zaleski was executing 22 etchings based on pictures which he took in the
steppes of Kazakhstan and offering them through subscription, as well as publishing a beautiful album La
vie des steppes Kirghizes in 1865, in Paris, at his own expense at the publishing company of the Luxembourg
Bookshop. Etchings along with the comment about the life of Kirghiz, Kasjaks, the flora and fauna of
Kazakhstan constituted the first unique attempt to pass on to Europeans a message about the local region.
For Europę, this work for a long time was the only source of knowledge about current Kazakhstan.
