rzystując sprzyjającą sytuację polityczną podjęto
wielką akcję zbierania składek na restaurację
zamku królewskiego, która swym zasięgiem obję-
ła cały obszar dawnej Rzeczypospolitej. Niestety,
wybuch powstania listopadowego spowodował za-
łamanie zbiórki pieniędzy, co w konsekwencji
zmusiło władze Wolnego Miasta do rezygnacji
z planowanej restauracji. Prace remontowo-kon-
serwatorskie miały bardzo ograniczony i doraźny
charakter, ponieważ były wykonywane tylko na
potrzeby instytucji mających swe siedziby na zam-
ku. Powoli, ale bardzo systematycznie zamek ule-
gał coraz większemu zniszczeniu.

S u m m a r y
The period of Wawel's history from 1815 to 1846
has not hitherto aroused much interest on the part of
historians and art historians. The scholarly literaturę
dealing with this period is scarce, most information
being scattered in synthetic works concerning the his-
tory of Wawel and Cracow. The study of Wawel's fate
in the time of the Free City of Cracow reąuires extensive
archival research. The source materiał relating to this
period is to be found mainly in the State Record
Office in Cracow.
The subject matter of the present essay is confined
to two problems. In the first part the architectural and
town-planning work carried out at that time is dis-
cussed, the main emphasis being laid on changes in
the buildings on the hill and on repairs conducted in
the castle. The second part gives a short description
of the institutions functioning on Wawel Hill. The
present study does not encompass the Cathedral, which
reąuires a separate archival investigation.
Towards the end of the 18th century Wawel was
a kind of township built up densely and chaotically.
In addition to the royal palące and the cathedral, there
were here the churches of St Michael and St George
and over 30 houses. During the first occupation of
