found on the walls of tombs that it seems quite likely that its nucleus may be derived
from the tomb of a real Sinuhe, who had led a life of adventure in Palestine and was
subseqaently buried at Lisht1. Needless to say we are hère on spéculative ground,
and in such a case no proof or disproof is strictly possible, unless an amazing chance
should restore to us the tomb of Sinuhe himself. Even in this case we should doubt-
less find that literary élaboration had greatly changed the expression and the character
of the original narrative, so that in its finished state the story could not claim to be
more than "founded on fact".

1. Professor Spiegelberg takes a similar view {Deutsche Literaturzeitung, 1912, Nr. 14, p. 861). M. Mas-
pero thinks the composition too artificial to be a real biography (Les Mémoires de_ Sinouhit, p. xxxv): It is
clear that the original biography, if such it was, has been greatly modifiée! ; but M. Maspero is not justifled
in arguing from the name of Sinuhe, see the note on R 2.
