number of forms of applied art, should ad-
minister its affairs in artistic surroundings
would hardly be questioned, and that in
housing itself in new premises it should
have decided to build something out of the
ordinary run seems right enough. By
choosing for these premises one of the
most picturesque of English architectural
styles, half-timber construction, and by
carrying out the work with the most careful
attention to detail inside and out, it has
added to London buildings one which has
a charm and a character entirely its own.
Decidedly the firm has worthily maintained
its traditions. a a a 0

The illustrations included, of a garden
statue by Mrs. Peacey, and of a coloured
earthenware Fighting Cock, by Mr. Harold
Stabler, have great interest as sound
examples of applied art. The garden statue
is welcome as a departure from the
ordinary run of such ornaments, too many
of which are frankly without any claim to
existence as artistic performances—there is
no reason why a garden should be made a
dumping place for things which would not
be tolerated elsewhere. Mr. Stabler's work
is noteworthy as a technical achievement,
and has decorative qualities which entitle
it to serious attention. /sua

and the dramatic sense which make his
pictures more than usually convincing. In
such subjects as The Stormy Day, The
Last Rays of the Sun, and Parnassus, with
its wild, lowering sky, there was ample
evidence of his strength, but that he could
be tender and deal delicately with subtle-
ties when the occasion arose was proved by
the dainty charm of his Morning—a dawn
effect—and by the gaiety of his sunny note,
On the Balcony ; and there were many other
things which testified to his versatility, f
Some idea can be obtained from the two
illustrations given of the nature of the new
