BIRMINGHAM—BOURNVILLE
BIRMINGHAM—We illustrate an in-
teresting excursion into the domain of
wood sculpture, the work of Mr. W. J.
Bloye, Modelling Master at the Central
School of Arts and Crafts. This figure of a
woman and child occupies the centre of
the new Carnegie Infant Welfare Institute,
Hockley Brook, of which Mr. J. L. Ball is
the architect. The statue is carved out of a
solid block of African mahogany, and is
painted in oil colours, the effect of the
whole being harmonious and striking. 0

BOURNVILLE.—We reproduce below
an example of steel bookbinding, a craft
for which there must be a very limited
field, but which, for special purposes gives
considerable scope to decorative treatment.
Mr. Broun-Morison, who designed and
executed this example, is trying to revive
popular interest in damascening. He has
here made able use of the process on a
binding for a MS. which, being written on
vellum, is suitable for this heavy cover;
and he has skilfully symbolised the
contents, while making the most of the
capabilities of his material, a a a
