XIVth INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION OF VENICE

" FEMMINA BIONDA." BY
UBALDO OPPI

(Venice Biennial Exhn., 1924)

Biennial; but I have good reason to
believe that he will have his own room here
in 1926, and Venice cannot afford to over-
look the great qualities in his essentially
mystic conception of art. Aldo Carpi, with
his Annunciation, touches a somewhat
different note ; and Egger Lienz gives us
a Resurrection which is almost too brutal,
in these gaunt uncompromising peasant
figures. But a young painter from Turin,
Mario Micheletti, who has exhibited with
success in London, has found something
of the tender intimacy of Gaudenzi's art
in his Sponsa Christi, in Sala III. 0
Apart from these, there are many
paintings of importance. Beppe Ciardi is
at his best in Riposo, one of the finest works
here ; and near this in Sala X. we find
Cadorin's portrait of Vittorio Pica and
that of Molmenti by Alessandro Milesi,
withLaurenti's Colloqui. Among the water-
colours Vincenzo Irolli's brilliant figure
Regatta Day, Paolo Sala's Kremlin, Renzo
Weiss, Galli, Zanetti-Zilla are to be
noticed ; but these works are shown in

a small room under such bad light that
their merits do not get a fair chance.
Elsewhere Nomellini, Bertieri, Italico
Brass, Scattola, Emma Ciardi, Falchetti
(The Dead Shepherd), Mara Corradini (In
the Dunes), Primo Conti, Caputo, Mancini
and Carozzi have work of interest. a

The sculpture this year is important,
especially in the individual shows of
Graziosi and Antonio Maraini, and the
large busts displayed by Wildt. Simplified
to the extreme limit and accentuated in the
main features, there can be no doubt of
the power and breadth of handling shown
in these heads of Benito Mussolini or of
Toscanini. Antonio Maraini's art is
decorative and harmonious ; while Gra-
ziosi, in his L'Anfora or his nude
Adolescente, shows more plasticity, more
feeling for the beauties and subtleties of
the human form. 0000

A brilliant study of movement is Catal-
di's Girl running. Arrigo Minerbi has
carved his fine fragment, The Victory of
the Piave, in " botticino." 00a
