of handling. With some noteworthy excep-
tions they were, however, a little obvious
in treatment and somewhat lacking in
subtlety of effect. An important collection
of etchings by Mr. Brangwyn was also
shown in the Galleries ; it gave a most
convincing impression of his largeness of
conception and mastery of handling.
From this collection the splendidly dig-
nified plate Ponte Rotto, Rome, has been
chosen for reproduction. 0 a t>
During the first fortnight of October an
exhibition of paintings and drawings,
mostly of small size, was held at the
Beaux Arts Gallery. It was remarkably
varied and there was much in it that
deserved a welcome ; it had, too, the merit
of showing that there is available for the
collector with moderate means plenty of
good work that is not at all costly. Among
the best things were several water-colours
of exquisite quality by Jules Lessore; a
vigorous and animated water-colour, The

Bathers, by Mr. Gerald Moira; a clever
pastel Head of a Girl, by Mrs. Granger-
Taylor ; a finely decorative landscape,
Storm Clearing, Yorkshire Moors, by Mr.
Harold Speed ; a couple of brilliant little
water-colours, by Mr. Ludovici; an autumn
landscape with much charm of colour,
Gathering Potatoes, by Mr. R. W. Allan;
and water-colours and drawings by Mr.
Rowley Smart, Mr. Hanslip Fletcher,
Miss Cumbrae Stewart and Mr. William
Walcot. 0 0 0 0 0

At the Redfern Gallery, Mr. Rothenstein
has been exhibiting a series of his portrait
drawings of various celebrities and a few
water-colours of subjects in the war
area. The drawings were not lacking in
character—the artist is generally successful
in suggesting the personality of his sitter—
but in method they were rather dry and
formal and in handling a little unemotional
and matter of fact. The water-colours
were mostly slight but fairly expressive,
