purposes. It has a place of some promi-
nence among works of its type, and its
qualities deserve recognition. Mr. Romilly
Fedden's water-colours, too, are of interest
as representing adequately the achievement
of an artist of much distinction and of
definitely personal methods. An exhibition
of his works is being held during this
month at Walker's Galleries. The water-
colour by Mrs. Bess Norriss, a portrait
of the artist's son, is attractive as a skilful
technical exercise with much charm of
style; it is very characteristic of the
practice of a painter who has to her credit
many successes as a miniaturist. a
Mr. G. W. Bissill's drawing, Driving the
Wedge, (see p. 280) is a significant illus-
tration of the way in which a decorative
convention can be applied pictorially with-
out losing the spirit of the subject. The
artist has drawn upon actual experience for
his motive, as he began to work in a mine
at the age of thirteen; it was several years
later, after he had been invalided out of
the army during the war, that he com-
menced to study at the Nottingham School
of Art. Mr. Farey, a drawing by whom
is reproduced, specialises with extra-
ordinary skill in architectural subjects;

MODERN MASTERS OF ETCHING.

UNDER the above title The Studio
is launching a series of mono-
graphs, each devoted to an eminent ex-
ponent of this delightful art. The volumes
will each comprise twelve large photo-
gravure reproductions of representative
plates, with a foreword by Mr. Malcolm C.
Salaman, Hon. Fellow of the Royal Society
of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and will
be issued in paper boards at the remarkably
low price of 5s. net. In making very
faithful reproductions by the beautiful
photogravure process, the Editor hopes to
stimulate the artistic interest of amateurs
and raise the standard of appreciation of
fine etching. No. 1, on Mr. Frank
Brangwyn, R.A., an artist of world-wide
fame in this and other mediums, will be
ready this month. No. 2, which will
appear in December, will treat of Mr.
James McBey, whose prints are eagerly
sought after by connoisseurs. 0 0
