ABERDEEN—BOLTON—COTSWOLDS

ABERDEEN—William Dyce was a
native of Aberdeen, and the Art
Gallery already possesses several of his
pictures in his various manners. The
Pre-Raphaelite style, however, which Dyce
imbibed, not from the English Pre-
Raphaelites, but from the German " Naz-
arenes," has hitherto been unrepresented
save by small landscapes. The picture
recently acquired is an important example,
is painted with minute care, and is much
warmer and fuller in colour than many
of his works. The subject is founded
upon a statement by Ricordi, that Titian,
when a boy, gave an indication of his
future eminence by drawing a Madonna,
which he coloured with the juices of
flowers. In this picture there is a unity—
despite the detailed perfection of finish—
and an atmospheric quality, often absent
from the works of naturalistic painters.
