TOKYO

TOKYO.—There are a large number of
societies of painters who profess to
follow what is commonly known as
" Seiyoga " (" Yoga " for short), meaning
" Western painting," either in oil or in
water-colours. And all the important ones,
with the exception of Nikakai and the
Salon, have already held their art exhibi-
tions this year. 0000
Perhaps the most popular, and in a way
important, one was by the Shunyokai, held
earlier in the season. The exhibition con-
sisted of about one hundred works by its
members and of about equal number of
pictures chosen from over 2,300 sent in
from outsiders. Among works shown men-
tion should be made of Gathering Herbs, a
fresco painting by Kosugi-Misei; Practice,
by Hasegawa-Noboru ; Autumnal Hill, by
Yamamoto-Kanae; and landscapes by
Kurada - Hakuyo, Umehara - Ryuzaburo,
Ishii-Hakutei and Koyama-Keizo. Prizes

" RAINING." OIL PAINT-
ING BY KATO-SEIJI

("Kofukai" Exhn. of
Western Style Painting)

were given to the three outside exhibitors :
Migishi-Yoshitaro, Yokobori-Kakujiro and
Kono-Tsusei. 0000
The eleventh annual exhibition of paint-
ings was held also at the Takenodai
Galleries in Uyeno Park by the Kofukai,
another influential association of painters
in " foreign style." Among others, the exhi-
bition contained a number of good exam-
ples in water-colours by Miyake-Katsumi,
whose reputation as water-colourist has
long been established, and by Nakazawa-
Hiromitsu, who has hitherto shown works
of delicate charm of colours in oil. Pastel
landscapes by Takeuchi-Tsurunosuke were
praiseworthy in bringing out best qualities
of that medium. Among oil paintings men-
tion should be made of A Corner in a Studio,
by Minami-Kunzo; Summer Clouds, by
Kobayashi-Mango ; Raining and Morning
at Hikone, by Kato-Seiji, and Country
Girl, by Atomi-Tai. Jiro Harada.
