information über das Kompaktgeschirr TC100,
erschienen in der Zeitschrift ’Bauwelt’ Nr. 24,
1962.

“Die Überschrift ist nur verständlich, wenn man
sie gut schwäbisch ausspricht: kompäktstail.
Solche Aussprache nämlich gehört zur 'kom-
munikativen Prägnanz’ des Weltbildes, das
vom Ulmer Kuhberg in die Niederungen derer
dringt, deren Eßgewohnheiten sich wandeln:
'Immer mehr Leute essen in Kantinen ...
Denn die Großstadt bietet neue Möglichkeiten:
man kann in Kaufhäusern essen, an Schnell-
büffets und in Selbstbedienungsläden.’
Kompäkt gesagt: diese Möglichkeiten sind so
alt, daß sie jenen wiederum ganz neu
erscheinen, die versuchen, 'die verschiedenen
Bereiche und Schichten des Gebrauchs, der
Technologie, des Marketing und der Ästhetik
zur Deckung zu bringen’. Und die genau
wissen: 'Erst die geeignete Konstellation
dieser verschiedenen Schichten führt zu einem
akzeptablen Resultat.’
Das 'akzeptable Resultat’ ist — gewiß hat’s
der Leser schon erraten — ein Hotelgeschirr.
Hinter ihm steht die Auffassung, 'daß die
Prinzipien für den Entwurf von Hotelgeschirr-
formen überholt sind’ und daß diese Prin-
zipien 'sich sowohl auf die Anzahl der
Geschirrteile als auch auf ihr formales
Gepräge’ erstrecken und 'daß es sinnvoll ist,
der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung von einer
überreichen Vielfalt verschiedener Typen zu
einer Typenbeschränkung zu folgen’ und 'daß
es im Gegensatz zu der heute allgemein prak-
tizierten Art des Porzellandesign sinnvoller ist,
ein Geschirr von den Möglichkeiten einer
rationalisierten Fertigung und vom Gebrauch
her zu konzipieren, als im Geschirr ein Objekt
künstlerischen Formenausdrucks zu sehen’.
Daraus ergeben sich folgende formale Charak-
teristika: Die Teile des Geschirrs 'gehören
jeweils einer von zwei Formenfamilien an.
Das Charakteristikum der einen Formenfamilie
ist der vertikale Doppelzylinder... Das Charak-
teristikum der anderen Formenfamilie ist der
Boden-Wandungswinkel von etwa 120° und
der zur Stapelstufe ausgebildete Rand’.

’Bauwelt’ Nr. 24, 1962.
“The headline is understandable only, when
pronounced in good Swabian dialect:
kompäktstail. Because such a pronunciation
belongs to the “communicative efficiency“
of the mental attitude which from the Kuh-
berg of Ulm penetrates into the lowlands
of those whose eating-manners are changing:
“More and more people are eating in can-
teens .. . For the big cities offer new possi-
bilities ... You can take your meals in Stores,
snack bars and self-service restaurants.“
In 'kompakt’ terms: these possibilities are so
old that they appear absolutely new to those
who try “to bring into accordance the
various factors of consumption, technology,
marketing and esthetics“. And who know
exactly: “Only the appropriate combination
of these various factors leads to an acceptable
result“.
The “acceptable result“ is — as the reader
will already have noted — hotel dinnerware.
It is based on the concept, “that the prin-
ciples for the design of hotel dinnerware are
antiquated“ and that these principles “extend
to the number of elements as well as to their
formal character“ and “that it is appropriate
to follow the economic development from an
abundant variety of different types to a
limitation of types“ and “that contrary to the
kind of China design as it is practiced today,
it is more advisable to design dinnerware
from the point of view of a rationalised
production method and of use than to regard
dinnerware as an object for personal artistic
expression“. This results in two formal
characteristics: The elements of the dinner-
ware“ belong to one of two form families. The
characteristic feature of one of them is the
vertical double cylinder... The characteristic
feature of the other one is the angle between
base and side wall of about 120° and the
edge which performs the function of
stackability“.
In 'kompäkt’ terms: the dinnerware ist stack-
able. Or in even more stacked terms: This
