3§4
RESTORED VIEW OF BATH-ROOM
Artificial
lighting
neces-
sary.
The little room itself was lighted only through the opening in the
balustrade on its Eastern side, by means of borrowed light from the 'Megaron'
beyond. We must also suppose that some kind of curtain could, when

necessary, be drawn across the opening. It may be inferred that it was
illumined when in use by one or more of the pedestalled stone lamps, of
which so many remains were found in the Palace, and one of these—the
' lotus' lamp illustrated abovex—has accordingly been placed on the coping
of the side balustrade.
