construction of the material, such as horizontal
lines for the shadows of roads, or upright lines for
the shadows of buildings. But it is more or less a
personal matter, for every artist expresses shaded

surfaces in his own way.
But it is as well to bear in
mind the suggestions I
offer you.
You have drawn the out-
lines of the trees, the long
sweep of their branches,
the outline of their masses
of foliage and the masses
of their shadows You
have noted the contour of
the branch by the form of
the shadow which is thrown
across it, or you have seen
revealed the irregularities
of the ground below by the
careful drawing of the
shadow -which rests upon
it. There will be but
little need of more drawing on the road if the shape
of the shadow be just.
When you visit a new country or a new neigh-
bourhood, don’t sit down at once with your colour-
