knowledge of constructional materials in the past and geometry. Familiarisation with this
former field of research is of fundamental importance to establishing the chronology of
changes brought about to the historical construction of this exceptional building, while
the latter discipline provides documented confirmation of the fact which until only re-
cently could only be formulated as a hypothesis; namely, that in designing and erecting
the Chapel's cupola an exceptional undertaking for the architecture of those times was
achieved through the applying ofa geometrically correct ellipse.
It seemed an equally justified move on the part of the editors to include in an issue
containing important discoveries from primary sources concerning the Latin inscriptions
placed by the founder in the Chapel interiors, as well as three contrasting interpretations
ofthe royal mausoleum 's decorative programme as presented in the main articles. Two of
these articles are the result of studies into wider issues which remain for the moment
unpublished, while the third contribution has been based on a lecture delivered at an
academic session held in the National Museum in Warsaw dedicated to the memory of
Tadeusz Dobrzeniecki. These works differ greatly from each other, for which reason it
seemed that publishing them in a single issue mightprove fruitful, providing as they do an
opportunity for comparing, among other things, contrasting points of view, means ofun-
derstanding and academic approach. Being fully conscious of the controversy of more
than one of the theses here, it may be assumed that they provide a solid basis for discus-
sion, revealing at the same time the current level of methodological awareness in this
country of the area of research known as iconology.
